The Good Person Test

Are You a Good Person... Good ENOUGH For Heaven?

GOOD NEWS 1/4

Because God is Holy he is therefore Just and must punish sinners. But the Good News is that God is also merciful and while you deserve God's wrath for your sin God has done something amazing to provide a way for sinners to escape his just wrath (divine anger) against their sin. Here's what Jesus said about this,

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotton Son [Jesus],

that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life."

(John 3:16)

Praise God for this great and undeserved gift to sinful humanity. God is both the righteous judge who convicts us of our sin and also the merciful judge who pays for it. Imagine standing in court, charged with a crime. The evidence is undeniable and you have confessed your guilt. The judge pronounces your sentence and then, to your great surprise, comes down from their place of authority and offers to write a cheque in full payment for your crime. If you accept the cheque, you are free to go. Justice has been served. This is what Jesus did for us, but on a much grander scale, when he paid the price for our sin by his death on a cross.

The Bible shows us how justice and mercy came together through Jesus death for sinners on a cross. Jesus died as a substitute for sinners, in their place, as a substitute which God accepted. We did the crime but Jesus Christ paid the fine.

Does this then mean that everyone is automatically saved? No! The next few pages will show you how a sinner can be saved from hell. It will show you how to receive that gift from God. You will also see, most importantly, why Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin making this gift valid.

The Bible says, "He committed no sin and no deceit was found in His mouth" (1 Peter 2:22). For God commendeth his love to us in this, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly" (Romans 5:8). We are ALL ungodly. "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Our sinful hearts makes it difficult to really appreciate how much. Now while "the wages [penalty] of sin is death [body and soul thrown into hell] the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ" (Romans 6:23). A person receives this gift when they received Jesus by repenting and believing the Gospel (Mark 3:15). This will be explained shortly. But first it is essential that we speak about Jesus as Saviour.

In the person of Jesus Christ, God Himself came to earth and dwelt among us in the flesh (John 1:14, 17, 18). Jesus, who is part of the divine godhead (Father, SON and Spirit) willingly laid aside all the glory, majesty and power he had in heaven and humbly took on the form of a man (Philippians 2:6-11). Jesus experienced life as we do in every way but without sinning (Hebrews 4:15). He gave up the glory of heaven to come to earth to die for sinful people (1 Peter 3:18).

He paid a debt he didn't owe because we owed a debt we couldn't pay.

The Bible says of Jesus, "Jesus lived a perfect life, showing who he was by many amazing miracles (John 14:11, Hebrews 2:4). Then, at God's appointed hour, he was crucified on a cross as full payment for our sin (Hebrews 10:12). All of our sin (1 John 1:9). But how could one person's death pay for another, even if that person was the perfect Son of God.

The Bible says that anyone who dies on a cross is cursed (Galatians 3:13). It's not that God wanted to hang us on a cross. He didn't. But the cross was the ultimate place of rejection and on the cross Jesus was rejected by God the (heavenly) Father in our place so we would not have to be rejected in hell forever (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

God is just. Sin had to be paid for. Jesus paid for it on your behalf.

The Good News is that on the cross, Jesus, who came to be the Saviour of the world, was separated from God in our place. Jesus died for you so you could be forgiven and have eternal life in heaven. Then, because Jesus was perfect and had not sinned, God raised him to life on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:4). He did this so that repentance and forgiveness of sins might be preached in Jesus name (Luke 24:47).

After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to many people at different times showing more amazing proofs of who he was (Acts 1:3, John chapters 20-21). This was before he was taken up into heaven (Acts 1:11; 1 Timothy 3:16) from where he will later come to judge the livng and the dead (2 Timothy 4:21; Acts 10:42; Matthew 25:31-46).

God wants to forgive you and give you eternal life. He does not want any to perish in hell (2 Peter 3:9). So he did all this for you. You are so very precious to him and his love is perfect towards you. It is so perfect and you are of such great worth to God your creator, that he was willing to bear the shame, mocking and curse of the cross on himself, to save your soul from hell, and that of every other person.

He bore our sins in his body on the cross so we might die to sin and live for righteousness (1 Peter 2:24).

God is both just and merciful. In his justice he rightly demands that sin must be paid for. In his unbelievable mercy, he paid for it himself. If you want to know what God thinks of sin, consider the penalty, eternal hell. If you want to know what he thinks of the sinner, consider the cross and Jesus hanging there with you in mind.
